8 Easy Mistakes to Avoid on Your Next Camping or Caravanning Trip

17 April 2025 8 Easy Mistakes to Avoid on Your Next Camping or Caravanning Trip

There’s nothing like back-to-back long weekends to pack the ute, hitch the van, and get away from it all. Whether you're going bush or heading to the coast with the kids, a little prep can make all the difference.

At Ovesco, we know our customers are the kind of people who take pride in being ready for anything. So here are 8 common mistakes we’ve seen—and how to avoid them with practical gear.

1. Overlooking the little things

It's the small gear failures that slow you down—like a busted hinge, worn-out handle, or a seal that won’t hold. Before you head off, check your canopy, toolbox, caravan and trailer. We stock a wide range of hinges, handles, latches, and rubber seals so you can replace what’s worn before it becomes a problem.

2. Packing without securing

Loose gear isn’t just noisy—it’s a hazard. Make sure everything on your tray, trailer, or canopy is locked down with tie-down rings or Quick Fist clamps.

3. Leaving your safety gear behind

A fire extinguisher might not be the first thing on your checklist—but it should be. We stock fire blankets, extinguishers, safety triangles, wheel chocks and more so you’re covered if things don’t go to plan.

4. Ignoring your seals and rubbers

Dust and water have a way of getting in when you least expect it. If you’re heading off-road or staying in a dusty spot, check your door seals to make sure they are in good condition.

5. Letting clutter take over your setup

Digging around for gear at the end of a long drive? Not ideal. Adding underbody toolboxes to your setup can keep things organised and accessible.

6. Not preparing for recovery

Soft sand, mud, or a poorly marked track can bring any trip to a halt. A basic recovery kit—like a snatch strap, winch kit, and recovery kit—can get you moving again.

7. Neglecting your water setup

Even on a short trip, water is key. A vehicle-mounted water tank can give you peace of mind, especially when you’re camping away from facilities. Make sure it’s secure, plumbed in properly, and easy to access when you need it.
