Camper Trailers are generally built tougher than your average caravan. As a result they get taken on some very rugged terrain and to places most caravans just wouldn't survive. For this very reason, they are still prone to wear and tear.

We've prepared a 9 Point Safety and Repair List of things to check or replace before you take your on its next great adventure.

1. Fire Blanket

Every camp kitchen should have one for peace of mind in case of a cooking fire. Convenient compact size to take up less storage space. Easy to use with instructions on high visibility packaging. A fire blanket smothers the flames by taking oxygen away from the fire. In the event of an oil fire in a cooking pan, by placing the blanket over the fire you cause minimal disruption and therefore minimise the spread.

2. Fire Extinguisher

Unexpected fire situations can cause damage and threaten life. Even a small fire extinguisher can be very effective in bringing this into control. A dry powder extinguisher with A - B - E ratings will cater for electrical, solids and fuel fires. A number of size options are available to suit your requirements.

3. Drawer Slides

Drawer slides used in slide out kitchens and utility drawers can be affected by harsh conditions whilst travelling. Dust, water, corrosion and constant pounding from rough roads can take their toll. Look out for poor or stiff operation of the slide. Check for missing bearings and worn guides. Available in a number of different lengths and weight ratings to replace those worn out slides. As an option you can upgrade to the convenient locking slides to ensure safe positioning of drawers when parked.

4. LED Lights

Old filament style lights can be unreliable with rough roads causing them to fail. Rain and water crossing can also cause corrosion of the festoon contacts making them operate intermittently. Checking your lights operation before travelling will help pin point any defects. Replacing old style lamps with modern LED lights has a number of benefits. LED's operate at a lower temperature, draw less battery current and are less susceptible to water, dust and vibration.

5. Water Tanks

Leaks in your water tank caused by rubbing or stone damage can leave you without a valuable resource. Inspecting the condition your tank often will ensure no surprises. Whether replacing an old tank or upgrading to a larger capacity there is a comprehensive range of HDPE food safe tanks available.

6. Rubber Seals

Rubber seals and adhesive sealing strips are an important part of keeping dust and water out of the interior of your camper. Identifying cracked, split or missing rubbers will ensure that you don't arrive at your campsite with a bed full of dust. Replacement is made easy with a range of push on pinchweld and rubber or sticky back foam and rubber strips. Conveniently sold by the metre.

7. Latches

Flush mounted latches can become worn or incorrectly adjusted which leads to loose locking doors. Door will not lock correctly or pop open whilst travelling. Some latches have simple adjustments that may help, otherwise a replacement latch is required. Available in different sizes and material types.

8. Catches

Over centre catches are simple and effective clamping devices. However consistently exposed to the elements they can deteriorate and become ineffective or break. Usually mounted on exterior surfaces they can become victim of passing tree branches when driving through the bush. A catch not clamping correctly properly may need adjustment or replacement. Over centre catches come in various sizes, finishes and mounts.

9. Gas Struts

Gas struts can be found on bed bases, camper tops and hinged doors. Struts are filled with nitrogen gas at high pressure. The most common failure is due to the gas leaking out from the main barrel. The reason is failure in the seal between the barrel and the shaft that goes into it. Corrosion due to weather or pitting due to stone damage will affect the smoothness of the shaft. A contaminated shaft will act with a grinding motion damaging the seal as it moves in and out. Keeping the shaft clean and having it mounted with the correct orientation will prolong a struts life. Replacement struts are easy to fit and information found on your old strut can help identify the pressure required.
