At team ovesco, we simply love our struts! Gas struts are a useful component that can improve the functionality, safety and comfort of a vehicle. Find out why our resident strut expert Gibbo can’t get enough of them.
So Gibbo, what exactly is a gas strut?
It’s the thing that stops your boot from falling on your head!
To get technical, a vehicle gas strut is a type of suspension component that provides support and damping. It is a sealed, pressurised cylinder that contains a piston and a small amount of gas, usually nitrogen, which is compressed by the movement of the piston.
These handy little components are used to support the weight of a boot, bonnet, or liftgate, and to dampen the movement of these parts as they are opened and closed.
Why are gas struts so useful?
There are tonnes of reasons why gas struts are great at what they do. Some of these include:
Support: Gas struts can support heaps of weight in a vehicle. This allows for easy opening and closing of these parts without requiring additional effort or the use of an external support mechanism.
Smooth operation: Gas struts provide a smoother and more controlled operation compared to traditional mechanical springs. They can dampen the movement of the component they are supporting, preventing it from bouncing or vibrating excessively.
Safety: Gas struts can also improve the safety of a vehicle by preventing components from unexpectedly closing or falling shut. This can be especially important for hoods, which could injure someone if they were to suddenly close.
Why are gas struts so darn tricky to work out?
‘Cause there are so many of them! It can be a real challenge to work out which strut you need for your application - which is a big reason why I enjoy them so much. I love the challenge of finding the right strut for every one of our customers’ different needs.
This is also why we’ve included this new feature on our website, a user-friendly drop-down menu that helps you determine which strut you need for your vehicle.
