Staff Product Pick: Piano Hinge

13 March 2023 Staff Product Pick: Piano Hinge

Strong, durable, smooth and clean in appearance, piano hinges are the favourite product of ovesco’s sales manager Caius. Why? Keep reading to find out why these nifty little hinges are so darn useful.

So Caius, what exactly is a piano hinge?

A piano hinge, also known as a continuous hinge, is a type of hinge that runs the entire length of the two surfaces it connects. It consists of two interlocking metal plates that are joined by a central pin, allowing the hinge to pivot and rotate, nice and smooth!

Are piano hinges, as the name suggests, just for piano applications?

It’s true that piano hinges are used in the construction of musical instruments, including the lid of pianos. However, they are also useful for many other applications too! These include doors, lids, cabinets, and other types of furniture as well as automotive applications like canopies and toolboxes.

Why on earth are they called piano hinges if they are used for so many things?

The term "piano hinge" is a misnomer! The hinge was originally called a "continuous hinge" because it runs the entire length of the two surfaces it connects. However, over time, the name "piano hinge" became more commonly used because of its frequent use in the construction of pianos.

Why are you such a fan of piano hinges then?

Where do I begin?

Firstly, they are strong and durable. Piano hinges are made from sturdy materials such as stainless steel, brass, or aluminium, which makes them highly durable and able to withstand heavy loads and frequent use.

Secondly, they’re super smooth. Piano hinges pivot around a central pin, which allows for smooth and consistent movement. This makes them ideal for applications where the hinge will be opened and closed frequently.

They are also great for distributing weight evenly. Because a piano hinge runs the entire length of the two surfaces it connects, it distributes the weight of the object evenly, reducing the risk of sagging or warping over time.

In summary, piano hinges are durable, adaptable, smooothhhh as anything and just pretty awesome!
